Elementary Music 101

A High-Quality Elementary Level Music Class for Homeschoolers

Service Description

Join us in our hour-long classes suitable for children ages 4-10. In each class we will do music activities and games, music history, featured instrument family, and a sprinkling of performances from our very own homeschooling community. Come on in for the music class, get inspired, and try something out, instrument petting zoo style! Skills build on each other, but the classes are designed to be able to do drop-in. OBJECTIVES: Learn a multitude of different styles of music around the globe Be comfortable with music in many different meters including 4/4, ⅜, 6/8, ¾ Be able to sight read rhythms in each Be able to use body percussion Be familiar with different terminology such as scales, staff, written music Notes on the staff with treble and bass clef Become familiar with instruments and instrument families Learn about the different periods of western classical music and composers from each era. WEEKLY TOPICS: Week 1: Medieval Era (500-1450), What is Music? Percussion Family Week 2: Renaissance (1400-1600), Sol Mi Do hand signs, 5 lines on the staff, Woodwinds Family Week 3: Baroque (1600-1750), Sol Mi Do hand signs, String Family Week 4: Classicism (1750-1830), Solfege vs ABC, Quarter notes and Half notes, More Strings Family Week 5: Romantic Period (1830-1900), Hand signs Do Mi Sol La Ti, Black and White keys, Equal temperament, Time Signatures Week 6: Romantic Period (Nationalism), Brass Family, Hand Signs Do Mi Sol La Ti Re, Interval Basics Week 7: 20th Century Classical Music: Post-Romanticism and Neoclassicism, Identifying notes on the lines and spaces, Hand Signs with favorite songs Week 8: 20th Century Classical Music: Serialism, NeoClassical, Dynamic Contrast with Cards, Chromatic Scale Week 9: 20th Century Classical Music: Minimalism, Explaining Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, and Form Week 10: 21st Century Classical Music, Rhythm Cards, Solfege with Hand Signs Do-Do, Jeopardy Game! Class Cost= $8/class OR $50/semester of 10 classes Class Size= Up to 15 students. Siblings under 4 or over 11 years are free to join. This class is reimbursable with FES-UA funds or Direct Pay optional.
